We do things old-school: Site finishing

Pre-finished factory hardwoods are relatively new to the world of flooring. In the old days, if you wanted a hardwood floor, the flooring would be sanded and finished on-site to create a perfectly flat and smooth floor in your home. And if that appeals to you, understand that it appeals to us, too. Thus, one of the services that we offer is the on-site finishing of your new hardwood flooring.

Flooring from scratch

Site finished floors are our signature service and we offer a wide variety of different wood species and gradings to our customers. Some of the most important questions we ask is: What do you want your floor to look like? Do you want character? Do you want a rustic look? Is it a smooth sleek look you are going for? Or you may be thinking what does all that even mean?

Well here it is in a nutshell:

The grading of the wood defines the amount of character marks found in the wood, with #1 being some character and #2 being full of character marks. Character in wood is defined by wood knots or dark streaks. Select & Better grading is clear wood that doesn't contain any character marks what so ever.

As you can see, there are many options to choose from as each species of wood have their own set of unique characteristics. For more info on which type of flooring would be the best fit for your project, contact us today.

The process we use for site finishing is the same time-tested approach floor professionals have been using for years. The initial flooring installation is pretty much the same whether the boards are finished on-site or whether you are using a factory-finished floor. Hardwood flooring is made with tongues and grooves and these boards are carefully cut and installed in your room or rooms. Yet, that is where the similarities end.

What comes next is the finishing process. We will carefully sand the floor. This not only provides a satin-smooth finish to the surface of the floor, but it also removes any little variances in the height of the boards that might have shown up in the milling process. Then, when a smooth hardwood surface is achieved, it is stained the color of your choosing (or left natural if that is your preference). A final step is that several coats of polyurethane are applied to the top of the floor creating a strong and durable protective surface on the wood.

What you will end up with will be something that is a beauty to behold. Further, it will be unique as it is a floor that is made and finished on-site for your home. It is a truly old-school flooring installation.
